Today is International Workers’ Memorial Day and I was glad to get the opportunity to attend the wreath laying outside the Town Hall with representatives from the Sheffield Trade Union Council, who hosted the event.

The day is commemorated to ‘remember the dead – fight for the living’ and we came together to remember those who’ve died in the workplace over the years, as well as all those thousands whose lives are changed permanently by accidents at work.

Events like this highlight the vital role our trade unions play in ensuring decent conditions at work, in representing workers and making sure they’re treated fairly. We have to work hard to ensure union membership is as high as possible and that trade unions are supported in protecting their members.
