Getting young voters registered is a key part of making sure they can stand up for their rights, and that’s why I was so pleased to be able to join my team and staff from Sheffield College to help register young people today. It follows other campaigning we’ve done at the College from Sheffield Needs a Pay Rise, who are campaigning for a true Living Wage in Sheffield.

Sheffield sadly has the lowest wages of any major city in Britain, and that falls disproportionately on young workers. It’s important that those young people have their voices heard in elections, and we found a lot of enthusiasm from those who hadn’t yet registered to vote, as well as a lot of support for votes at 16.

But we also found that a lot of young people don’t feel they know enough about politics and elections, and it highlights how important it is we have proper citizenship education in school.

If you're not yet registered to vote, you can sign up online here - it only takes two minutes.
