Exclusions are particularly high in academies.

This month I met with the Secretary of State for Education to discuss my serious concerns over the rates of school exclusion in Sheffield. Data from the past few years has shown shocking rates at some schools, with one secondary school issuing more temporary exclusions than it had pupils.

Exclusion rates have been rising for four years and at least in Sheffield are particularly high in academies. We know that exclusion from school leaves children particularly vulnerable to violence, and while its use is justified in extreme cases, it cannot possibly be suitable for up to a fifth of children in some schools.
