Sheffield is being short-changed over Devolution.

Figures from three government agencies have shown Sheffield City Region being short-changed by the Tory government over devolution.

The National Audit Office, the Office for National Statistics and the Department for Communities and Local Government have shown that funding per head from the Sheffield City Region devolution deal is just £22 per head. That’s 11 times less than the £244 per person now being given to Northern Ireland as part of Theresa May and the DUP’s backroom deal.

Northern Ireland is an important part of our country and people there deserve good quality, well-funded public services and infrastructure. But so does Sheffield City Region, which with almost as many people has some of Britain’s most deprived communities.

Since 2010 Sheffield City Council and others in the region have faced cuts of hundreds of millions of pounds from central government, making life hard for local people. £22 a head is a long way from the original ambition of devolution, and the Northern Powerhouse now looks pretty beleaguered.
