I’m delighted to see that over 600 people have signed my petition calling for free travel for young carers. We’ve seen some success already with the rollout of discounted leisure passes from SIV and Places for People, and a trial of bus passes for some young carers. I’m really hopeful we can keep the pressure on and see all 7,000 of Sheffield’s young carers given free travel soon.
Young people with caring responsibilities deserve the chance to learn, work and have a social life just as much as anyone else, and with the amount they give in caring for their loved ones, it’s only right they get something in return.
The staff and volunteers at Sheffield Young Carers have been great in helping to promote this petition and in working with the council to win some victories for their carers. We’re really close to hitting the 700 signature mark – if you want to help us reach it, you can add your name here.
