Louise Haigh MP Fighting for Sheffield's future
Following the troubling news that fracking is to go ahead in North East Derbyshire, I was pleased to be able to attend the Global Frackdown Carnival, a well-attended protest against fracking held in Sheffield City Centre and attended by campaigners from across the region – you can watch my speech to the rally here.
The following week we heard disturbing reports that Claire Perry, the Minister responsible for fracking, had written to a fellow Tory MP claiming there was scope to relax the regulations on earthquakes related to fracking. Fracking was halted in 2011 after a magnitude 2.3 earthquake near a fracking site in Lancashire. I challenged her on this in Parliament and was told there were no plans to change the rules, but the fact it was even discussed is a serious cause for concern.
