Small Business Saturday is taking place this weekend and is a great opportunity to support independent businesses in our area.

Small and medium-sized companies are the backbone of our economy, providing 60 per cent of private-sector jobs, and help to give our high streets character among a sea of corporate chains. Yet a number of small businesses have been in touch to express concerns about the Tories’ mismanagement of Brexit. Business-owners are understandably alarmed by the on-going uncertainty caused by the shambolic Tory negotiations and the consequences of a no-deal Brexit.

Only Labour can be trusted to negotiate a new comprehensive UK-EU customs union that will protect small businesses and their employees’ jobs. A Labour government would further support small businesses by reintroducing the lower small profits rate of corporation tax, while clamping down on big firms that make late payments to small companies.

In the meantime, you can help Sheffield’s small businesses to thrive by popping into a local shop or café this Saturday. Check the Small Business Saturday website to find details of businesses to support.
