I have joined with all Sheffield’s Labour MPs in writing to the Foreign Secretary pressing for action on the case of the Sumarin family and the threat that annexation of Palestinian land presents to the peace process. In our letter we set out the background to the case:

“The Sumarin family own the property and have lived there for over 50 years. Since the early 1990s settler organizations, namely the Jewish National Fund and the Elad Foundation, have sought to seize the family’s home under a tendentious interpretation of the Absentees’ Property Law of 1950. Later this month the Israeli courts will hear the family’s final appeal against their eviction. We understand that this development has caused widespread controversy within Israel, with many Israelis objecting to the state supporting settler organisations’ seizure of occupied land.”

We went on to urge the Foreign Secretary to build on the UK’s formal opposition to the annexation of Palestinian land by “challenging individual cases such as this, or we will simply be allowing the de facto annexation of Palestine”, directly with the Israeli Government and through the United Nations.
