The Secretary of State’s decision not to order a public inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane will be a desperate disappointment to the Finucane family, who like so many victims across Northern Ireland just want the truth.
Labour remain absolutely committed to a public inquiry, and honouring the commitments made to the family.
Confidence in the Secretary of State’s approach to dealing with the legacy of the past is in short-supply amongst victims. He now has an enormous responsibility to rebuild that trust by establishing a comprehensive legacy process which delivers the truth so many have waited so long for.
Victims and their families simply must have faith in what comes next, and the Government’s commitment to build a ‘broad-based consensus’ must be fulfilled.
