It’s almost a year since the pandemic hit the UK and yet many people are still excluded from government support, including lots of people who work in the creative industries.

It’s also been revealed that, during the Brexit negotiations, the UK government rejected an EU offer to allow visa-free tours by musicians. A proposal to exempt performers from the huge cost and bureaucracy for 90 days was turned down because the government insisted on denying that to EU artists visiting the UK.

Less than a year ago the government said free movement was essential for the music industry and now we learn Ministers refused it. This will have a devastating impact on the British music industry, which is one of our most significant exports.

Unless these issues are solved, Britain will face a terrible loss as musicians, festivals, and venues disappear for good. For the sake of people’s livelihoods, our heritage, our culture and our economy, the government must act to ensure that everyone who is currently excluded gets the support they need.
