We needed a Queen’s Speech that rose to scale of the challenges that our country faces – from unemployment to climate change. Instead, The Government’s proposals failed to meet the level of transformation that’s needed in our economy, our public services, and our society.
Eleven years of Conservative rule from Westminster has meant underinvestment, cronyism and broken promises that have weakened the foundations of our country. Even now, the Tories are continuing to waste public money by handing contracts to companies run by their friends, while rewarding NHS staff with a pay cut and forcing local authorities to hike council tax.
There can be no fair recovery without greater recognition, rights and reward for working people. The Tories have turned their back on the people who have helped us through this crisis and treated health and social care workers with contempt.
At the heart of the Queen’s Speech should have been a plan to tackle unemployment, particularly the shocking levels of youth unemployment. And our economic recovery must be a green one – one that decarbonises our economy, creates the jobs of the future and makes us world leaders in tackling the climate crisis.
