Cost-of-living crisis
Cost-of-living crisis

The cost-of-living crisis is a national emergency that will affect us all, as across Sheffield and the country households face energy bills they can’t afford.

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley has created an online resource which collates the details of organisations, services and charities that are available to help people manage their finances. Also included are a list of mental health charities based across the city to help people manage their own mental health at this worrying and stressful time.

This is such a worrying time for everyone, and I’m contacted daily by people who need help with their finances and just don’t know where to turn. I spoke to one lady who said that she has started to miss several meals because she can’t afford to heat her food. This is absolutely heart-breaking and just should not be happening in one of the richest countries in the world. The government have not done anywhere near enough and have no long-term plan to bring down bills.

Labour has a fully funded plan that would ensure that energy bills wouldn’t go up by even a penny this winter. We would freeze the price cap, saving households £1,000 and we’d make sure there was targeted support for those who need it the most. Our long-term plan is to insulate millions of homes, reduce the amount of energy we use, get bills back under control and invest in more sustainable energy sources.

At times like this, politicians need to decide whose side they’re on – those of hard-working people who are struggling or those of the big oil and gas companies who are making record profits. Labour’s plan would really support people at a time of crisis.

In the absence of any substantial government support, charities and organisations are filling the void and offering the help and support needed. But it can be really confusing about where to turn. There are so many great organisations and a host of grants that are available to people, but sometimes you just don’t know where to start looking for help. That’s why I’ve created this online resource. It includes details of groups and organisations that can help people.
