Today the Government has introduced the Employment Rights Bill, fulfilling its manifesto promise within the first 100 days of office.

This Bill sets in motion Labour’s plans to revolutionise the UK’s outdated employment laws and deliver a fairer deal for workers, with over 30 crucial reforms aimed at improving pay, conditions, and security for millions.

This landmark legislation includes groundbreaking measures such as banning zero-hours contracts, ending fire-and-rehire practices, and establishing day one rights for workers to access paternity leave, unpaid Parental Leave, and protection from unfair dismissal.

The Bill also introduces flexible working as a default right, strengthens statutory sick pay, and establishes a Fair Work Agency to enforce these new standards—ensuring every worker is protected, and every employer plays by the same rules.

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley said:

“Since being first elected in 2015, I have heard from countless workers in my constituency who have been stuck in precarious, low-paid jobs, without the protections they need. No longer.

“This Bill will deliver real, meaningful rights from day one of employment, providing the security and respect working people deserve.

“This is about levelling the playing field for working people and building a future where everyone can thrive in the workplace. By raising the floor on workers’ rights, we’re delivering the fairer, more secure future our country needs.

“By improving conditions, this legislation will help businesses retain staff, reduce recruitment costs, and create a new partnership of cooperation between trade unions, employers and government

“This Bill is about creating a better future for our workforce—one that values people, rewards effort, and delivers opportunity for all.”
