Louise Haigh MP Fighting for Sheffield's future

Louise Haigh MP Welcomes Bill to Secure Vital Funding for Local Schools
Sheffield Heeley MP Louise Haigh has welcomed a critical new Bill aimed at securing increased funding for schools across the country, ensuring every child has access to a high-quality education.
The Non-Domestic Rating (Multipliers and Private Schools) Bill, which passed its third reading in Parliament this week, removes the eligibility of private schools for charitable business rates relief. By ending these tax breaks for private schools, the Bill will generate significant revenue to fund key education priorities for the upcoming year.
This additional funding will directly benefit state schools in Sheffield, allowing them to invest in essential teaching staff.
The Bill is part of a broader effort to create a fairer business rates system that protects the high street, supports investment, and is fit for the 21st century. Alongside the changes to private school tax breaks, this Bill introduces powers to create new lower business rates multipliers for qualifying retail, hospitality and leisure properties, and higher multipliers for high value properties
Commenting on the Bill, Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley said:
“Every child in Sheffield Heeley deserves the best possible start in life, and that begins with access to a properly funded education. For too long, schools in our community have faced impossible choices due to limited resources. This Bill is a vital step towards ensuring our schools have the funding they need to deliver the high-quality education every child deserves.
“Investing in education is about more than supporting our children—it’s about securing the future of our entire community.
“This is about making fair choices. By ending unfair tax breaks for private schools, we can fund improvements to education for the 93% of children who attend state schools, giving every child the best chance to succeed.
“Education is an investment in our future, and this Bill delivers on that promise.”
