I am pleased to hear that former Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson MP, had announced that he would personally lead on drawing up an international oceans strategy for the Government and hope that his successor will uphold this commitment.
As a vegetarian for over 20 years and as a long-standing animal rights campaigner I am proud that the last Labour Government had a strong record on international animal welfare. I support the plans to have a safe haven for the animals of the Antarctic, to make sure that the water is off-limits to industrial fishing vessels. I completely agree that having healthy oceans can also tackle the worst effects of climate change.
I have written to the new Foreign Secretary to ask if he is going to uphold the promise, made by the former Foreign Secretary, to continue the backing of the creation of the Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary in the Weddell Sea and as soon as I have received a response I will provide a further update.
