E1 Israeli Settlement
E1 Israeli Settlement

I am deeply concerned about both the security situation in East Jerusalem and the situation facing many Palestinian families at risk of eviction.

I was appalled by the horrifying violence and heart-breaking loss of life we saw across Jerusalem, Gaza and Israel last May. I utterly condemn the attacks that have endangered civilian lives and resulted in Palestinian and Israeli casualties, including the heart-breaking loss of many children.

Settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories are illegal under international law. I am firmly opposed to illegal Israeli settlements, both in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. They entrench division and make the prospects of a just and lasting peace harder to achieve.

The UK Government must object to the expansion of settlements in the strongest possible terms. I am aware that a hearing is due to take place relating to the proposed E1 settlement plans on 12 September. I believe these plans should be withdrawn. We cannot allow actions that will set back the prospect of peace in the Middle East to go unaddressed and the UK Government should continue to review the appropriate response to any attempts to change the facts on the ground.

I am also concerned about continuing evictions and demolitions in the occupied Palestinian territories. Palestinians must not be evicted from their homes in East Jerusalem or the West Bank. The eviction of Palestinians from their homes causes unnecessary suffering and calls into question the Israeli Government’s commitment to a viable two-state solution. I do not accept the annexation of East Jerusalem by Israel. Israel is the occupying power and must comply with international law.

I believe there must be a renewed focus on negotiating a two-state solution that ensures a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. This must include an end to the forced eviction of Palestinians in East Jerusalem, respect for sacred sites and adherence to international law on settlements. For the British Government’s part, I believe this should also include an acceptance of the need to recognise Palestine as a state, as nearly 140 other countries have done.
