Ceasefire Deal
Ceasefire Deal

By now I am sure you will have seen the monumental news of an agreed ceasefire and hostage release deal, marking what we hope will be the end of 15 months of devastating conflict. The initial six-week truce, set to begin this Sunday, offers a much-needed moment of hope after more than a year of unimaginable suffering.

From my very first day in Government, I have stood with my Labour colleagues in calling for an immediate ceasefire to save lives, free hostages, and deliver urgent relief to those affected.

This announcement brings immense relief—not just for those directly affected but for all of us who have worked tirelessly to advocate for peace, compassion, and justice. It is a significant step, though I know it will feel especially meaningful to many of you who have written to me over the past year.

This ceasefire includes the release of hostages, including women, children, and the elderly, alongside a reciprocal release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. Critically, it will also allow for significant humanitarian aid to reach Gaza. For the displaced families who have lost everything, these efforts mean the possibility of returning home and rebuilding lives. The daily arrival of aid lorries will offer vital relief to a community desperate for support.

But let me be clear: this agreement must be the beginning, not the end. The reconstruction of Gaza and the rehoming of displaced families will require sustained international commitment. The UK must play a leading role in these efforts, and I will continue pressing the Government to ensure this happens.

While this ceasefire is a profound moment of hope, it also serves as a reminder of the lessons we must urgently learn. Long-term peace can only be achieved through a just and sustainable resolution to this conflict—one that guarantees safety and dignity for both Palestinians and Israelis. The Prime Minister’s stated commitment to this goal is encouraging, but words must translate into action.
