Championing Creativity: Louise Haigh MP Welcomes New Investment in Britain’s Creative Industries

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley has welcomed the Government’s £60 million funding boost to the creative and cultural sector. This is a vital step towards unlocking the potential of one of the UK’s greatest strengths.

The creative sector, which contributed an impressive £125 billion to the UK economy in 2023, is a powerhouse for jobs and innovation, accounting for 1 in 7 jobs across the nation. From film studios to grassroots music venues the Government’s latest investment will support the creative economy’s growth while providing vital opportunities for young people to develop their talents.

For Sheffield, a city synonymous with homegrown talent and cultural excellence, this investment marks a turning point. As the birthplace of global icons like the Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, and Def Leppard, Sheffield is living proof of the transformative power of creativity. The city’s creative sector has inspired a generation and continues to drive economic growth and community pride.

The Culture Secretary has announced:

  • £60 million package of support to drive growth, including £40 million investment for start-up video game studios, British music and film exports and creative businesses outside of London
  • That the British Business Bank will increase its support for the sector to help the UK’s Creative Industries realise their full growth potential.
  • The launch of the Soft Power Council. This brings together experts across culture, sport, the creative industries and geopolitics to showcase the best of Britain around the world.

With creativity at the heart of its Industrial Strategy, the government is committed to building a Britain where talent is celebrated, opportunities are spread, and the arts continue to inspire and innovate for years to come.

Speaking about the importance of championing the next generation of creatives, Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley said:

“Sheffield has long been a city of makers, doers, and creators. From the Arctic Monkeys to countless grassroots artists and businesses, we’ve shown the world what homegrown talent can achieve. Creativity is one of Britain’s greatest strengths, but it’s only through real investment and opportunity that we can ensure the next generation of talent has the chance to thrive.

“This Labour Government understands the untapped economic and cultural value of our creative industries, and we’re committed to giving every young person the tools to discover and develop their potential. Sheffield’s rich legacy of innovation and artistry shows us what’s possible.”
