It was utterly disgusting to see Tory MPs vote down Labour’s motion in Parliament that would have extended free school meals over half-term. Boris Johnson and the Tories badly let down more than one million children and their families.
I’m very glad that our Labour Council stepped in to fund these meals during half-term and grateful to all the local businesses that also provided extra free food to families in need. If the government won’t do the right thing, at least our Council and local community will.
I welcome the government’s belated announcement that free school meals will be available during future holidays. I pay tribute to Marcus Rashford and others for shining a spotlight on this incredibly important issue, and for forcing yet another u-turn from the Prime Minister.
