Proportional Representation
Proportional Representation

Thank you for contacting me following our fantastic party conference, regarding the issue of electoral reform.

It was inspiring to see so many people excited at this year’s Party Conference in Liverpool, about the very real prospect of a Labour Government. The package of policies we announced last week are bold and set a clear ambition to create an economy that works for working people and gives Britain its hope and its future back.

To name a few, we announced our commitment to achieve 100% clean power by 2030, a new British Energy Company owned by the people, renationalisation of our rail, 13,000 more police officers, doubling medical school places to 15,000; creating 10,000 more nursing and midwifery placements every year and implementing a genuine living wage that matches the cost of living.

The success of these policies has been reflected in recent polls, which are proving what we already know, that people across the country are sick and tired of this Tory Government. Therefore, I believe that we should be focused on winning the next general election and enacting all of the vital policies announced at Conference under a Labour Government. After all, we have to get elected on the FPTP system in order to win an election.

I know many people are dissatisfied with our current political system and this resulted in a vote to change our voting system from First Past the Post to a system of proportional representation (PR). I absolutely respect this vote and your views regarding the introduction of a multi-party system. Therefore, I am very open to the debate around PR and will continue to have these conversations with my constituents and parliamentary colleagues.

However, I do not share your judgment that PR is the only path to removing the Tories from office. There are, of course, strengths and weaknesses to all voting systems and we must recognise that changing the voting system alone would not address the disconnect that some voters feel about our political process. I think we should therefore consider this question as part of a wider package of constitutional reform to address the growing democratic deficit across the country.

I fully understand and share your frustration due to the continued success of the Conservative Party in recent elections. I too want to see them out of office and am passionate about the positive change we would be able to achieve.

Ultimately, I am working every day to fight for the needs of my community, and I believe this will be best achieved with a Labour government.

Thank you once again for contacting me and sharing your views. I will continue to support efforts to create a fairer and more inclusive democratic system which allows as many people as possible to be engaged in the process.
