Thank you for contacting me following the resignation of Liz Truss and the need for an urgent General Election.

Liz Truss only spent 44 days as Prime Minister and every day of her leadership has seen a new crisis at the heart of Government. The damage they have done will take years to fix.

Truss and her cabinet came into Government to push their dangerous agenda and produced a shameful budget, which brought into the light our now former Prime Minister’s true colours.  This is a Government who holds our country in utter contempt, while focusing its attention instead on their ideological mission of making the rich even richer.

The budget was a reckless gamble, which cost working people and families across South Yorkshire dearly. This was not a plan for growth, but a plan to reward the already wealthy through abolishing the top rate of income tax. A return to the trickle down of the past, not a brave new future.

In the past 12 years of Tory Government all we have to show for their efforts is low growth, low investment, low productivity and now the lowest consumer confidence since records began.  The only things that are going up are inflation, interest rates and bankers bonuses.

The British public deserve a proper say on the country’s future. They must have the chance to compare the Tories’ chaos with Labour’s plans to sort out their mess, grow the economy for working people and rebuild the country for a fairer, greener future. We must have a chance at a fresh start. We need a general election – now. I simply don’t see how we can continue with a third prime minister with no mandate.

Only the British public should be able to decide who should lead now. The Conservative Party has shown it no longer has a mandate to govern.

I can assure you that I will be strongly advocating for an urgent General Election.
