Catastrophic failings on the NHS

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley has slammed the government for their catastrophic failings on the NHS.

For months we have seen record NHS waiting times, with ambulances forced to queue outside A and E departments across the country for hours on end. Leaving many people, who were in urgent need of an ambulance, unable to access one.

The NHS is in crisis with too few doctors and nurses to fulfil the unprecedented demand, meaning many are unable to treat patients safely and on time.

During the pandemic, we saw NHS staff going the extra mile to ensure that people were safe and treated. Many NHS workers are now facing ‘burn out’ with demand for health care through the roof.

Yesterday, a Tory MP admitted in Parliament that only Labour has a long-term plan for the NHS, whilst the Government are failing.

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley said:

“I’ve been contacted by constituents who have experienced first-hand the crisis that is unfolding within the NHS. One person told me how his wife waited more than eight hours for an ambulance, after she had collapsed on the kitchen floor. He was unable to lift her because he, himself was recovering from heart surgery.

“They called 999 three times and each time were told that the service was very busy, and they couldn’t get an ambulance to them. They called for an ambulance at 6pm and it eventually arrived at 1.50am.

“My constituent tells me that he does not blame the ambulance service for this or the NHS, they do an amazing job, in very difficult circumstances – but he does ask, ‘what’s going on with the NHS?’

“The government must do the right thing and address this as the national emergency it is. The longer they wait, more people will lose their lives, unnecessarily and many more will face life changing consequences – ones that can be avoided.”

A Labour government will undertake one of the biggest expansions of the NHS workforce in history. They will train the staff needed to provide care for patients and this would be paid for by abolishing the non-dom tax status.
