This month, I’ve had the honour of representing the people of Sheffield Heeley for eight years as your MP.

I’m proud of many things I’ve achieve both in Parliament and across the constituency, campaigning for better public services and transport, to prevent violence against women and girls and to support parents and carers to get their children the help and support they need with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

I’ll continue to work hard for you all and fighting for the things that matter to you.

Labour to fix broken bus system

The Tories promised bus services that run so often that passengers wouldn’t need a timetable. Instead in the last year alone more than 1,000 services have been lost across the country, leaving passengers up and down the country stranded.

I was proud to announce the first steps of Labour’s policy to reform the country’s broken bus system and hand power and control to local communities, giving them control over their routes, fares and services.

Illegal migration bill

Many people have written to me, concerned about the Home Secretary’s Illegal Migration Bill. I think everyone agrees that we need strong action to stop dangerous boat crossings that are putting lives at risk and undermining border security, and we need a humane asylum system that ensures the UK plays its role in helping people who are fleeing the most appalling circumstances – but this Bill achieves none of those things, and that’s why I voted against it.

People contact me daily because they’re worried about the cost-of-living crisis, rising energy bills and how they will make ends meet.

Reports show that 70% of households in Yorkshire face fuel poverty, but it doesn’t need to be this way.

A Labour government will cut energy bills for good saving each UK household £476 every year until 2030.

This month, the government finally announced that it would not be renewing TransPennine Express’ contract to run rail services in the North of England.

This broken service has comprehensively failed the north and after months of needless damage, the Tories finally accepted they can no longer defend the indefensible.

Victims Bill

For more than 13 years the criminal justice system under successive Tory governments has let victims down and allowed criminals to go unpunished. Trials are delayed for years, and record numbers of criminals are getting off scot-free leaving many victims feeling powerless and traumatised.

Labour plans to put victims at the heart of the criminal justice system by

Offering free legal advice to rape survivors, giving victims of major tragedies the same legal representation as the authorities that failed them, giving victims of anti-social behaviour a voice and strengthening powers of the Victims’ Commissioner.

Leasehold reform

There are almost 5 million leaseholders across the country, who, despite owing their own homes don’t own the land on which the house is built.

This means that many face significant charges on top of their housing costs and have no control over their own homes.

This week Labour forced a vote in the House of Commons to abolish the leasehold system and give owners more rights over their home.

Sanctuary housing repairs

I recently met with the management of Sanctuary Housing to raise with them all the incidents of anti-social behaviour, housing repairs that have not been completed and other complaints that residents have been raising with me.

I also visited some of the Sanctuary Houses on the Errington Estate to see for myself the condition they expect residents to live in.

Sanctuary Housing agreed that their response to residents’ complaints and reports of issues has not been acceptable and they are putting a plan in place to ensure that complaints are dealt with in a rapid manner.

I and Local Councillors will be holding Sanctuary Housing to account and ensuring that they are delivering for their residents.

Have your say on Special Educational Needs and Disability services

SEND survey

I’m asking all parents and carers and practitioners who work with young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to share with me their experiences of getting support for their young people.

Since becoming an MP in 2015, I’ve supported hundreds of parents and carers to get support for their children and I want to hear from others to share best practice and knowledge of how to navigate a complex system.
