The National Audit Office has published their latest report detailing the Condition of School Buildings across the country and found that the overall condition of the school estate is declining, and there are safety concerns about some types of buildings.

Commenting on this report, Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley, said:

“It’s appalling that 700,000 students in England are studying in schools requiring major building or refurbishment that are basically a safety risk. Parents and carers should be safe in the knowledge that their children are safe in their school, as a basic.

“I have visited schools in my own constituency who do not have running hot water, who can’t open the windows on a hot day because of fear of breaking the window, or where they have had to cordon off an area of the school because it’s not safe for the children to be in that area. It’s an appalling situation to be in.

“Labour has repeatedly raised this risk that many school buildings pose, but this has been met with a wall of silence by the Conservative government. It’s time the government come forward with an urgent plan to bring school buildings up to the condition children deserve.”
