The fight continues to protect Doncaster Sheffield Airport, as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh MP, today urged Mark Harper, the Secretary of State for Transport to protect the airspace around the airport.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is a hugely important asset for South Yorkshire, supporting more than 2,000 jobs in the local economy

Louise Haigh MP and fellow MPs across South Yorkshire and leaders at Doncaster Council firmly believe that Doncaster Sheffield Airport is still viable and are working hard to reopen it. This includes negotiating with the current owners Peel.

Speaking at Transport Questions today, Louise Haigh MP, said:

“The Secretary of State for Transport, Mark Harper has it within his power to protect the airspace around Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which will enable Doncaster Council to conduct further negotiations with Peel Group around the lease, will he do this?”

The minister responded that they are aware of the question and will respond in due course.

Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh MP, said:

“Successive Tory governments promised to do all they could to save Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and each time they have failed to act and fulfil their promises.

“It is important that we immediately protect the airspace around the airport, whilst Doncaster Council negotiate with Peel Group around the lease, with a view to bringing the airport back. The Secretary of State has the power to do this. That’s why I have asked him to urgently use this power and protect a vital, strategic and economic asset for South Yorkshire.

“If he does not act, it will be another indication to people across South Yorkshire that this government are not prepared to stand up for them.”
