Letter to Home Secretary

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley has called on the government to take firmer action and to recommend that councils and social landlords evict tenants in cases where they breach Respect Orders, and in particular cases where they are terrorising their neighbours.

Tenants across Sheffield Heeley are suffering from antisocial behaviour and in some extreme cases are being forced to live in fear in their own homes.  After witnessing too many examples where action simply could not be taken, Ms. Haigh has written to the Home Secretary asking her to develop guidance under the Crime and Policing Bill to address this.

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley, said:

“Home should be a sanctuary for everyone but too many residents are victims of serious crime and antisocial behaviour in their own homes.

“I met with a woman recently who had to get up at 5am to walk her dog and was then trapped in the house for the rest of the day because she was so scared of her neighbours, who brazenly deal drugs and are involved in gang activity in the neighbourhood.

“I supported the woman to move, but it shouldn’t have been her who had to give up her home of 10 years.  The criminals who are terrorising the neighbourhood should have been evicted.  Why should the victim always have to move?

“That’s why I have written to the Home Secretary to ask that she develops guidance to ensure that where new Respect Orders are broken, councils and social landlords should consider eviction.
