Thank you for those who have written to me to raise concerns about the UK Government’s approach to the Global Ocean Treaty negotiations.

Protecting our oceans is crucial if we are to resolve our planet’s climate and environmental emergencies. The Labour Party’s Environmental Manifesto in last year’s General Election made clear that a Labour Government would ‘lead the global effort for a UN Ocean Treaty’ and support the designation of ocean sanctuaries. I will work as an opposition MP to hold the Government to account on its policy towards the ocean environment.

As your MP I have written to the Government to urge that the UK fully supports the UN’s Ocean Treaty and plays a constructive role in the negotiations, working to strengthen the current draft. I will update you to let you know when the Government responds.
