Iran Nuclear Deal
Iran Nuclear Deal

Thank you for contacting me recently about the Iran nuclear deal.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was a landmark agreement and I believe President Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from it was reckless and deeply regrettable. I continue to believe that the JCPOA framework is the best option to limit Iran’s nuclear programme.

Since the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, Iran has flagrantly violated the agreement’s terms. It has pursued a dangerous path of non-compliance and increased the quality and quantity of its enriched uranium production far beyond the JCPOA limits.

As you know, negotiations have been ongoing since April 2021 to try to restore the JCPOA. I support these talks and believe a pragmatic approach is important. However, I know there has been increasing frustration with Iran’s intransigence throughout the negotiations. I am particularly concerned that Iran’s persistent refusal to co-operate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in matters including its inquiry into prior nuclear activities signals a lack of transparency while it continues to increase its nuclear capability.

If diplomacy and efforts to restore the JCPOA fail, the consequences may be severe. The return of sanctions, a rapid expansion of Iranian nuclear activity, and a heightened risk of military tension in the region are likely outcomes. However, restoration of the JCPOA should not be the only aim. We must continue to support our international partners, including Israel, by holding the Iranian regime to account on wider issues such as its ballistic missiles programme and support for terrorist groups and militias throughout the Middle East. I am seriously concerned about the threats Iran has made against Israel and it is important that these matters are addressed and moved up the international agenda.

I believe the nuclear deal is a platform on which progress can be built and future arrangements can be reached. I will continue to follow developments and bear in mind the points you have raised.
